La primera casa que se construyó en la finca de Swinton Park fue encargada en 1695 por el comerciante de lana y caballero de campo inglés Sir Abstrupus Danby. Sus sucesores construyeron un establo y una portería, y en la década de 1760 plantaron parques y crearon una cadena de cinco lagos. En 1882, Samuel Cunliffe-Lister compró el castillo a la edad de 68 años. Emprendió un amplio programa de construcción, añadiendo un tercer piso y ampliando el comedor. De 1976 a 1998, el castillo fue ocupado por la Fundación Educativa Lindley, que lo explotó como centro de formación para directivos. Mark Cunliffe-Lister, bisnieto de Molly, compró el castillo con su madre, su hermano y su hermana en mayo de 2000. El 17 de junio de 2000, Mark y Felicity (los actuales barón y baronesa Masham) se casaron y, al regresar de su luna de miel, se trasladaron a Swinton para poner en marcha el negocio familiar.
